Surrender. Surrender. Surrender.
We hear it an awful lot in the spiritual community. And then we’re told, if you’ve already surrendered, surrender more.
All well and good in theory, but it’s important to remember that there’s a sweet spot. Yes, on one hand, surrendering to the state of what is keeps the churning and turmoil at bay. There’s only so much that you can control. Stop forcing. We needn’t white knuckle it through life trying to exert pressure everywhere. How exhausting.
But on the other end up the spectrum is the nefarious surrender. It’s the one whispered by cult leaders to convince you to bend to their whims. It says, things aren’t going your way because you’re out of alignment. Surrender.
What it silently omits is that in these cases, alignment really means submission to someone else’s wants, needs, and demands. It paints you into a corner, placing you on a hamster wheel of never being or doing quite enough. Insidious.
It’s important to know where you are on this spectrum. Surrender is not always the answer. Sometimes you need to push back.
